Cookies and local storage

A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to keep and send back on later visits. Local storage is a similar space in your browser that a page can write to and read from, but which is never sent to any server. This site uses cookies mainly for Google's analytics and advertising services, and local storage for the games themselves.

Nothing stored by the games identifies you. A saved case is a case number and a set of marks on a grid.

Cookies this site uses

CookieSet byPurposeTypeLasts
__cf_bm Cloudflare, through our host Kinsta Tells real visitors from automated traffic so pages load reliably. Strictly necessary About 30 minutes
Consent cookies with names beginning FC (such as FCCDCF, FCNEC) Google's consent notice Remember the consent choices you made so you are not asked on every page. Strictly necessary Up to 13 months
_ga, _ga_<id> Google Analytics Tell a returning browser from a new one and record page views and game events. Analytics Up to 2 years
Advertising cookies such as __gads, __gpi, IDE, test_cookie, and partner cookies listed in the consent notice Google AdSense and its advertising partners Show adverts, limit how often you see the same one, measure them and, only with your consent, personalise them. Advertising From a single session to about 2 years

In the UK, the EEA and Switzerland, the analytics and advertising cookies are set only after you allow them in the consent notice. The full list of advertising partners and what each one does is inside that notice, under its partners or vendors view.

What the games save

Each game keeps its own small records in your browser's local storage so that an unfinished case survives a reload and your settings persist. These records never leave your device.

RecordExampleWhy
Current caseThe case number (seed) and rank you were playingReopening the same case when you return.
Marks and notesWhich squares you have crossed, filled or pencilledNot losing your work on a reload.
Cases crackedA count per gameThe tally shown beside the New case button.
SettingsYour chosen rank, board size or opponent levelStarting where you left off.
Recent casesA short list of recent case numbersAvoiding repeats when you ask for a new case.

Most of these keys begin with dp: followed by the game's name. If your browser blocks local storage, the games still work; they simply forget the case when you leave.

Change your choices

If the consent notice was shown to you, you can reopen it here and allow or refuse analytics and advertising cookies again at any time.

You can also control Google's advertising directly through Google ad settings, and opt out of personalised advertising across many companies at Your Online Choices (UK and Europe) or aboutads.info (United States). Google explains its own cookies on its cookies page.

Every browser also lets you block or delete cookies for a single site or for all sites. Look under Privacy, or Site settings, in your browser's settings menu. Blocking all cookies does not stop the games working.

Clear saved progress

To wipe what the games have saved, clear this site's data in your browser (usually under Privacy, then Site data or Cookies and site data, then search for detective-puzzles.com). This removes your unfinished cases, your cases-cracked tallies and your settings along with any cookies. The next case you open starts from a clean desk.
